I'm baa-aack!

Maybe writing that whiny post the other day was cathartic. I've been having effortless fun with the kiddies again - awesome!

But that is not the reason for this post. This one is going to be an actual update on renovation stuff!

Although spring and summer and especially fall seem very far away right now, I know that it is not that long till we find ourselves mid-reno while full-on finalizing details for the wedding. So. Research, planning, etc has begun in earnest.

Last weekend we went to the kitchen and bath show to check out ideas and perhaps knock some items off our list. What kind of counters? What makes a patio door a good door? How wide are patio doors? How tall? What style and kind of cabinets? See, many many questions.

We did discover some useful things, such as a patio door that seals itself shut by going right into a pocket- pretty hard for air to go through that seal! - and a gas hot water heater that vents out the side of the house rather than up the chimney.

Mostly, though, it is overwhelming. You  can spend tens of thousands of dollars on every imaginable part of your house, and it just boggles the mind. After a while we were both walking around in a daze, a bajillion stainless-steel faucets dancing before our eyes.

'The Thing' about this renovation is as follows:
#1. We're doing it once and once the walls are open we mayaswell finish the job, so we're gonna do it RIGHT.
#2. CRAP this is expensive and we're doing it all at once. Maybe we don't REALLY need (stainless steel appliances, concrete counters, under-cabinet lighting, spray foam insulation, take your pick). On the other hand, see #1.

You can see how this could be cyclical.

Sometimes we also waffle on the magnitude of the project. Most of the time we feel fine about it. We can do it. If we get all our ducks in a row before we start, there should be no problem since we're doing the vast majority of the work ourselves. However, we also take turns FREAKING OUT about what a vast undertaking this is and whether this is really a good idea. Thankfully, the freak outs have yet to occur simultaneously for us. THAT is when there could be real trouble.

The wedding planning is also ticking along. I'm trying to get the catering pinned down in the next few weeks. And then the rest should be gravy. Hopefully. Fingers crossed. I may have to get out the sewing machine for one of my hair-brained ideas and anyone who has ever seen my jean blanket knows that absolutely nothing straight or accurately measured has ever come of that.

So. Always something!

In other good news: Winter is here and although there is only about 1/8th of the snow I'd like to have, there is just barely enough to go skiing, so we're going to go. On the weekend. FUN!

  3. Appliances come at the end of the project but you ought to consider purchasing these at wholesale prices in AB. Pretty substantial savings of about 30%
