PATIO DOOR!!!!

Yesterday was a big day around here. Finally, after months/years of describing where the door was going, it was arriving!

Step 1*: Cut hole in wall. (Actually, the real step one is to put a header in to hold up the house above, but we did that a long time ago)

Step 2: Beg for sawsall to finish cutting the hole. Have your friend's dad finish the cut for you because he does it really straight.

Step 3 (Not Pictured): Haul the patio door up on the deck.

Step 4 (Not Pictured): Admire the patio door, then realize none of us have any idea how to put it in. Which is the top? What are those sticky-outy parts for?

Step 5: Make a plan. Use crappy old skill saw to cut the siding off around the hole so the patio door can sit flush with the house.

Step 6: Employ an unwitting friend to help.

Step 7: Make sure you go all the way around! The bottom has a nailing plate too!

Step 8: Try to manoever the door into position. Lift with your legs, not your back. Realize the hole is not big enough and/or not straight enough. Use crappy skill saw to shave down the waves.

Step 9: Use whatever means necessary to get the proper sawing angle. Repeat this process several times. (Repeats not pictured)

Step 10: Finally, after trying many times and one successful dry fit, put caulking all the way around the door and then lift into position one last time (bottom first! Then top!). Screw it in as fast as you can before it falls out again.

Step 11: Admire!

View from the front door! Woot woot!

* These are not the actual steps for installing a patio door, although they did work, the door is in, and it is level and square. So....we win!

  3. Great job, guys! I think it’s cool that you have your own procedure just as long as the door was properly positioned, fastened, and sealed. What room does it open up to, by the way? I have mine in the family room. And the addition of the patio door really transformed the room into a more pleasant space. ;]
